What Matters Most to our Community

The Bega Valley Data Collective (BVDC) is thrilled to share the results of our “Measuring What Matters in the Bega Valley” project!

This initiative launched late last year concluded in April this year, the aim was to capture how our community felt about having a say in decisions that affect their collective wellbeing. Through surveys, workshops, and online sessions, we received a wealth of valuable insights that paint a clear picture of what truly matters to the people of the Bega Valley.

Your Voice, Your Vision

The overwhelming responses from the survey and workshop group discussions generated rich insights, such as a strong desire for a community-driven approach to wellbeing. Residents expressed a desire for a future that prioritises not just economic prosperity, but also social connection, physical and mental health, and environmental sustainability.

 Survey Quotes

Here are just some of the quotes from the 317 survey responses:

“General feeling of wellbeing. Pride in what we have, rather than disappointment in what we lack.”

“Health services, health of community mental and physical, education at all levels, environment, our future, how we want Bega Valley to look and feel in the future.”

“Decision making driven by wellbeing indicators rather than economic profit.”

“This knowledge would inform our work in the community; it would also strengthen our applications for funding.”

“A thriving and prosperous Bega Valley where prosperity is shared equally with all.”

“Healthy happy community, engaged in living well and sustainably.”

Emerging Themes

Here are some key themes that emerged from analysing the responses to the survey questions on data use for community-led decisions and outcomes from using wellbeing indicators:

Strong community connections: A sense of belonging and connection was a recurring theme. Residents value a supportive and inclusive community environment.

Holistic wellbeing: There was a clear desire to move beyond solely economic indicators of success. Health access, healthy lifestyle choices, and a clean environment were frequently mentioned.

Data-driven decisions: The frustration with seemingly arbitrary decisions suggests a strong preference for evidence-based approaches to improve community wellbeing.

Local ownership: Residents expressed a desire to be involved in shaping the future of the Bega Valley. A wellbeing framework would help reflect the community’s unique needs and aspirations.

The Value of “Measuring What Matters”

The findings from the “Measuring What Matters in the Bega Valley” project establishes a powerful foundation for the creation of a community wellbeing framework here in the Bega Valley.

By understanding what matters most to residents, we can now:

  • Develop a framework that truly reflects community priorities.
  • Identify areas needing improvement and track progress over time.
  • Empower organisations with data to advocate for positive change
  • Inform local decision-making leading to a more sustainable and prosperous future.

The Journey Continues

The findings from “Measuring What Matters” are being analysed to define what actions the BVDC will now take. We are now entering a new phase where we will work alongside the community to develop a Bega Valley community wellbeing framework. This framework will be a roadmap to a brighter future, shaped by our community’s input and guided by data.
